A Powerful Golf Swing

You need stronger abs for golf whether you are a beginner or low-handicapper. A powerful golf swing originates at the center of your body. This area is referred to as your core and there are some specific core exercises that strengthen these important muscles.

Golfers are well aware of their leg and arm movements in making a better golf swing and a lower score. Your core is the link between the major muscles of your upper and lower body.

The abdominal and lower back muscles make up this center of power for most body movements and in particular for a powerful golf swing.

You need stronger abs for golf because it is within your core that force is transferred between the legs and arms. The stability for a balanced golf swing comes through strengthening these muscles with core exercises.

Weak core muscles will lead to a less powerful golf swing and also lead to more injuries. Lower back injuries lead to many golfers giving up the game in their later years. The weak muscles finally yield to the stress and forces of a golf swing by tearing and becoming traumatized.

  • Perform cardio exercise equipment 3-5 times per week.

  • Practice good posture mechanics. For example: bend your knees when lifting objects.

  • Stretch major muscles each day.

  • Gradually and incrementally strengthen your core. It’s easy to overdo it in the beginning which leads to injuries.

  • Strenghten all your core muscles. You can’t rely on one exercise such as crunches. Integreate front and side planks, hyperextensions. and even ball push-ups for a well-rounded core routine.

  • Perform core exercises slowly and smoothly. Don’t rush through your routine with quick, jerky movements.

  • Always perform a warm-up and cool-down prior to exercising your core. This also holds true for your golf round. A warm-up and cool-down with stretching will keep your muscle loose, flexible, and more injury resistant.
