Relaxation

Relaxation, who has time for that? This quote by Dr. Archibald Hart in his book,
Adrenaline and Stress
should inspire us: "Of all the techniques available for counteracting stress and reducing the symptoms of distress, deliberate relaxation represents the most well-developed and thoroughly researched. It is SAFE, effective- and DOESN'T COST ANYTHING. Not only is it the cheapest healing force we know of, it is also probably the most effective."
It seems almost too good to be true that the remedy to some of life's most devastating ailments is so easily available.Mayoclinic.com cites these advantages to this increasingly rare use of time in our culture: * Slowing your heart rate * Lowering blood pressure * Slowing your breathing rate * Reducing the need for oxygen * Increasing blood flow to major muscles * Reducing muscle tension We are not made to go at full speed 24/7. Our muscles, mind, heart, blood vessels, and eyes need time each day to relax. We also need extended periods of SLEEP to give our whole system time to recover and prepare for the next day. Failing to meet this need brings a host of health consequences. "SLEEP DEPRIVATION has been shown to contribute to high blood pressure and a compromised immune system. It is estimated that 67% of Americans are sleep-deprived. "
A recent study at Columbia University found that our nation's OBESITY EPIDEMIC is being driven in part by the decreasing number of hours Americans are sleeping. Are you starting to see some links here? It is easy to push this aspect of wellness to the back-burner. DON'T! I know, I know. You simply don't have time to relax. On top of that we've been conditioned to think that resting is for people who don't care anything about success and achievement. WRONG! Check out this list of people who most people would consider successful who were known for their NAPPING: Thomas Edison Johannes Brahms Leonardo Da Vinci Thomas Edison Eleanor Roosevelt Napoleon Bonaparte Albert Einstein Winston Churchill John D. Rockefeller You might consider yourself the world's quintessential Type-A personality. You can change. YOU MUST CHANGE. For your sake and the sake of those who love you.
A word about Dr. Archibald Hart. Through his writings he has had a major influence on my life. You will not be disappointed by any of his books.
Adrenaline and Stress
is one of his books that is simply a must read for most people. Buy it, read it. Read it again. One last quote from Dr. Hart from this great book: "I sincerely believe that if we could all learn effective relaxation of at least one of the major systems of the body, we could put many of the DRUG COMPANIES OUT OF BUSINESS! We could reduce the demand for tranquilizers, painkillers, and antacids by an unbelievable amount. We would SLEEP BETTER and LIVE LONGER."
