Lose Belly Fat

You can lose belly fat to dramatically improve your health and wellness. I know, it's easier said than done. Losing belly fat is a goal for many of us each and every year that never quite gets accomplished. Yet, the current obesity epidemic indicates that this is an important goal that we should diligently attempt to reach as soon as possible.

To fight belly fat effectively you must understand some basic facts about body fat. You can’t change these facts so you must plan to burn belly fat in light of these scientific and physiologic facts:

Lose Belly Fat Facts

  • Fat is stored in individual cells called adipocytes. Although a belly can become quite large it is still composed of millions of microscopic cells.

    You don’t gain belly fat in pizza-sized portions. You gain it microscopically. And when you lose belly fat you lose it at the cellular level. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can lose large amounts of fat overnight.

  • The number of fat cells is determined during childhood. There is some evidence that fat cells may increase in number during the adult years. But for the most part this is number that is fixed during childhood. This is why fighting childhood obesity is so important.

  • You will not lose belly fat by eliminating fat cells. You burn belly fat by shrinking fat cells not losing them. Even after you shrink these cells they will still be present and waiting to regain their size if you accommodate them.

  • Fat is stored energy. Your body needs energy and fat is how your body stores energy for future use. Fat is not the problem; excess fat is the problem.

    Fat is essential to life; excess fat threatens to shorten your life. Your body maintains a very delicate between using and storing fat as energy. You need to burn off belly fat while maintaining this healthy balance.

  • Radically reducing calories is not the solution to belly fat. Most people think slashing calories is how you lose belly fat fast. It is true that calorie reduction is a part of the fat loss equation. However, it needs to be a gradual and moderate reduction.

    When you drastically reduce your intake your body goes into starvation mode. Your fat storage mechanism kicks in and your body stores more fat. It will also hold more tenaciously hold on to the fat it has already stored. You will lose water and muscle in this mode but losing belly fat won’t happen.

  • Fat cells release their fat when your body needs more energy. Your body is in the fat loss mode when it requires energy. This is what is referred to as a calorie deficit.

    With a deficit between what your body needs and what is readily available through carbohydrates, your fat cells will release its stored energy. Creating a calorie deficit is how to burn belly fat.

  • There are only two ways to lose belly fat. You create a calorie deficit by moderately reducing your calorie intake and exercising.

    Keep this in mind when you are evaluating diet plans and exercise machines. The exercise must be sufficient to create a calorie deficit. This means aerobic or strength training at moderate intensities and for sufficient durations and frequencies.

  • You cannot target the fat around your belly. I know you’re saying, “But I want to lose my belly fat.” You will burn belly fat with the proper plan and program. But you will lose fat that is stored over your whole body as well.

    You will probably lose fat in other areas before you burn off belly fat. Hundreds of crunches will not help you lose belly fat fast.
