How to Lose Love Handles

I’ve seen people doing all kinds of twisting and bending in the gym with the hope of flattening the sides of their waist. Many of these are actually very good exercises for strengthening and developing the external obliques. The problem is that you can actually increase the size of your love handles if you increase the size of your external oblique muscles. In fact, if you are struggling with oversized love handles you should stop doing any twisting or bending exercises that work the external obliques.

Tips to Lose Love Handles:- Think Body. Fat is fat no matter where it is. It belongs to your entire body. You can’t exercise your arms and get rid of flabby triceps or do thigh exercises to reduce fatty thighs. The same is true for abdominal fat. When you lose fat you lose it over your entire body so keep the “big” picture in mind.
- Think Cells. We tend to picture fat in large globs. Well, these globs are composed of very small cells. In fact you probably have between 25 and 275 billion of these cells called adipocytes. You don’t get bigger by growing more adipocytes. Instead, the adipocytes you have just get larger by absorbing more fat.
- Think Food. Fat cells get bigger when they are fed. These billions of tiny fat cells get larger when they are fed high-fat, high-calorie foods. They aren’t called fat cells for nothing. They absorb fat. These billions of microscopic cells absorb microscopic amounts of fat to make our waist anything but microscopic.
- Think Less. You knew this would be a part of how to lose love handles. You have to
eat less calories and less high-fat food.
When you don’t feed these fat cells they shrink. They won’t go away but they will shrink. When these billions of adipocytes shrink so will your love handles.
- Think Permanent. The good news is that you can shrink those fat cells. The bad news is that they don’t disappear. They hang around ready to absorb more fat if you decide to ever feed them again. So think of making long-term permanent changes in your diet.
Here are some tips to help you stay motivated.
- Think Exercise. When you exercise your muscles need energy. Fat is a great source of energy. Those billions of fat cells help out by releasing their stored fat into your blood stream. There is no way to determine which fat cells will release their fat first. For some people it comes from fat in their face. This is genetically determined. But eventually the fat in your love handles will release their fat.
- Think Muscle. Exercising your
major muscle groups
will stimulate the adipocytes to release fat. Forget trying to target a specific area like your love handles or thighs with a particular exercise. If you think you can get on a machine and burn off your love handles, go back to the beginning of this list. The advantage of
strength training
is that it builds muscle which stimulates the release of fat from fat cells.
- Think Best. Much of our body size and shape is genetically determined. Maybe I can’t have the body of an elite bodybuilder. But I can have
the best body
that I can have. Let that be our goal. Be your best.
