Home Elliptical Machines

Home elliptical machines are being purchased by both beginning exercisers and serious athletes. When they broke on the exercise machine a couple of decades ago they were thought to be a passing fad. Today we now see them being used in ever increasing numbers and especially by those who are trying to burn belly fat.

For years running has been the favorite form of aerobic exercise for many people. This resulted in the popularity of treadmills as the number one choice for home gyms. But now many runners are starting to suffer from the high impact on joints caused by running. This is one of the chief reasons for the rising number of home elliptical machines today. People are looking for low impact aerobic exercise and elliptical trainers provide this.

You simply won't get the jarring impact on your knees, hips, ankles, and back that you get by running. In fact the gentle motion will even strengthen and improve flexibility of joints.

But why not an exercise bike? Well, this is certainly a low impact form of exercise that burns calories but it isn't a form of weight-bearing exercise like ellipticals. That means you won't be improving bone density like you do with elliptical trainers. This is of special significance for those concerned with the onset of osteoporosis.

Another great benefit is the potential offered by many machines for an upper body workout. Most machines are equipped with handles that provide a workout for the chest, back, and arm muscles of the upper body.

Before you make a purchase for your home gym you need to do some research. You should look for a machine that is:

  • Stable. Many cheap machines just aren't stable enough. This is especially true if you're like me and aren't small. The machine will move on the floor if it isn't stable enough. This will result in a less than safe workout that will not be very efficient.
  • Adequately equipped. Many features are available so you need to know what you want. You can find machines with features all the way from heart rate monitors to television monitors.
  • Programmable. This will greatly enhance your exercise experience and help you avoid boredom.
  • Stride Right. Make sure you don't get a machine with too short of a stride length for your height.
