These 3 W's

To fight belly fat you must have the proper weapons. You may know someone who is constantly trying to lose belly fat but their waistline never shrinks an inch.

They are most likely trying to use weapons that are totally ineffective for losing belly fat. In fact some of these can actually make their belly fat problem worse.

What are some of these ineffective weapons against belly fat?

  • Fad diets. Some of these call for a ridiculously low calorie consumption each day. This is not only ineffective to reduce belly fat, it will almost always lead to more abdominal fat. These diets will wreak havoc with your metabolic rate and your motivation to have flat abs.

    You can actually lower your metabolic rate so that you will gain more fat on less calories than you currently eat. Don’t fight belly fat with a severely reduced calorie diet.

  • Fad machines. You can turn your television on anytime and find an informercial promoting a new abs machine. I can guarantee you the models using the machines in these productions didn’t get their flat abs using an abs machine.

    At best these machines will target your abdominal muscles and give them a little workout. They will not help burn one ounce of belly fat off your midsection.

    At worst these machines can cause injury to your lower back if they are not biomechanically sound in their design.

  • Fad supplements. Sure, we’d all like a magic pill or potion that would help us to lose belly fat and get those flat abs. It just doesn’t work that way.

    At best you are simply wasting your money on a concoction of vitamins and minerals with little more than a placebo effect. At worst you could actually take a supplement that is unhealthy and even harmful.



Instead of following the fads use these time-proven and effective weapons to fight belly fat. I call these the 3 W’s to help you remember them each day. Think belly fat weapons:

3 W’s to Fight Belly Fat

  • Walking. It isn’t the only form of aerobic activity and it might not be the best but there are good reasons that in fitness surveys walking continues to be the most popular. Some of these reasons are:
    • low rates of injury
    • very kind on joints, especially the knees
    • easy to improve the benefit by walking more briskly
    • easily incorporated into a busy time schedule
    • no special skills or equipment required
    • can be sustained for a lifetime

    Aerobic activity is essential to lose belly fat and keep it off for most people. There are some who can lift weights with such intensity that their heart rates will stay elevated long enough to burn fat.

    A question for even these people is: “Will you be able to do this when you are 80 years old?” Even the most athletic individuals should consider incorporating walking into their exercise program for this good reason.

  • Weights. You don’t have to join a health club or buy an expensive set of weights to benefit from a good resistance training program. You can use your own bodyweight to build muscle.

    Strength training builds muscle and there are many benefits to having more lean muscle mass. Some of these benefits are:

    • increased ability to perform daily activities
    • enhanced physical appearance
    • improved self image
    • anti-aging benefits
    • increased rate of burning calories while resting
    • reduced risk of injury

    It is the calorie-burning benefit that will help you with your belly fat problem. Adding muscle is like transforming your body into a fat-burning machine.

    You can do this without spending all your spare time in a gym. Research has revealed significant benefits from moderate intensity and moderate duration strength training sessions.

  • Watch. Yes, the watch on your wrist can be quite effective as you fight belly fat. Getting flat abs isn’t rocket science. It is really a numbers thing.

    If you know certain numbers and pay close attention to these numbers you will lose belly fat. Ignore these numbers and eventually your belly fat problem will grow worse.

    When you look at your watch let the numbers you see remind you of some important belly fat loss numbers. Here are some of these important numbers:

    • 1: Eat within one hour of waking up in the morning. It is important to not start the day in starvation mode.

    • 3-4: You should eat small meals every 3-4 hours during the day.

    • 2-3: Moderate intensity strength training 2-3 times per week is sufficient to build fat-burning muscle.

    • 3-5: Cardio exercise at moderate intensity 3-5 times each week will help you lose belly fat at a sustainable pace.

    • 30-45: For optimum fat loss results try to do your aerobic exercise with 30-45 minute sessions.

    • 1-2: These are critical numbers. Don’t try to cheat on these. You can only lose 1-2 pounds of fat each week. So, be patient. Think ahead to what you will look and feel like in a few weeks if you will stay on track with a sound program to lose belly fat.



By the way, they have really improved the looks of heart rate monitors and these can easily and fashionably be worn as your wrist watch. A good heart rate monitor is a very effective tool in staying on track to lose belly fat.
