Do Elliptical Machines Work

Do elliptical machines work if you're trying to lose belly fat and get in shape? This is a common question have after seeing someone using an elliptical trainer. That's because we are more accustomed to the running motion seen on treadmills than the gliding motion of ellipticals.

But don't let that gliding motion fool you. These exercise machines are now being used by elite athletes and Hollywood stars trying to lose belly fat fast. Treadmills are still quite popular but there are some very good reasons that elliptical trainers are rapidly increasing in popularity in health clubs and home gyms.

Do elliptical machines work? Yes, and here's why you should consider using one:

  • Low impact aerobic exercise. This is one of the main reasons people even begin to consider using one. Most runners eventually develop injuries due to the pounding it takes on the knees, back, ankles, feet, and hips. Even aerobics classes can be pretty high impact. Ellipticals, on the other hand use a smooth, non-impact gliding motion while still providing a good fat-burning heart rate.

  • Weight-bearing aerobic exercise. Strong bones are very important especially as you grow older. Riding a bike is good aerobic exercise but does very little for you bones. Elliptical trainers, on the other hand, promote more bone density. Bones and joints are strengthened with regular use.

  • Easy to use.When you first look at one they may be intimidating. But they really are very easy to use. Most people feel very comfortable on one after just a couple of minutes. Start out just moving your lower body and then progress to your arms as well.

  • Full body workout. Most ellipticals come equipped with handles to work the upper body. That means you can work your chest, back, and arm muscles as well as the thighs, hips, and calf muscles of your lower body.

But don't think these exercise machines are magical. I see people get on them and barely move while they read a magazine. You can't lose belly fat with that kind of workout. They are like other forms of exercise in that there are 3 variables that determine if you will reach your fitness and weight loss goals:

  • Frequency. You need to perform aerobic exercise at least 3 times each week. Because ellipticals are low impact you could probably build up to 5 or even 6 times each week. Just be sure not to overdo it. Rest is always important.

  • Duration. In the beginning you may need to just exercise for 5-10 minutes. Slowly build up to 30 minutes and even 45 minutes if possible.

  • Intensity. You have to at least break a light sweat. This really is where people miss the mark with aerobic exercise. I recommend learning about heart rate training. I always use a heart rate monitor while exercising. I figure if I'm going to workout I might as well accomplish something.

    I use the Garmin Forerunner 305. It has a GPS which is great for when you go walking outside. You get all kinds of information in addition to your heart rate such as the number of calories you burn. Click on the image below for more information.
