First, let's answer the question, what is an elliptical trainer?

Elliptical trainers are cardio exercise machines that came on the fitness scene back in the 1990's. When they were first introduced the question was, do elliptical machines work? People just weren't sure that elliptical trainers could be used as effectively as treadmills which had been around for a long time.

And cheap ellipticals were nowhere to be found in the 1990's. Ellipticals were very expensive and priced out of most people's budget for a piece of home gym equipment.

But slowly people were being introduced to them in health clubs and their popularity grew. Eventually elite athletes were even using them to improve their strength, conditioning, and flexibility. As the years passed the elliptical's popularity grew both in health clubs and eventually in homes.

Elliptical trainers are now right behind treadmills as the #1 choice for aerobic exercise equipment. There are three major reasons for their rise in popularity:

1.Low impact aerobic exercise. Many people turn to elliptical trainers out of necessity. They were runners who developed an injury from the trauma of running which is very high impact. The elliptical, on the other hand, provides a great workout without the stress on your back, knees, hips, knees, and ankles.

2. Upper body workout. Even inexpensive ellipticals will come with upper body handles to work your back, chest, and arms during your cardio exercise. This helps increase the heart rate while also strengthening these muscles.

3. Lower prices. As prices have come down more and more people are placing elliptical trainers in their home gyms. I recommend doing your research to be sure you are getting the best machine possible for reaching your goals. Some cheap ellipticals come with everything you need for great workouts while others simply will not hold up over time.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Make sure your machine is stable.

  • Make sure the stride length is adequate for your height.

  • The foot platforms should be roomy and uncramped.

  • Check the dimensions to be sure you have allotted enough space in your home gym.

Do elliptical machines work? Yes, if you will. So be sure to use your elliptical trainer at least 3 times each week to meet your wellness goals.
